Hiking on Isle of Skye (Part 2)
We packed as much hiking into one day as we could. After leaving the fairy glen, we randomly found several more beautiful places to pull off. Another stop included Kilt Rock and Mealt falls which was one of the must dos on the tourist lists.
Driving around Isle of Skye
I planned for us to drive from the Fairy Glen to the Quiraing. Using google maps as our guide, we left the Fairy Glen and drove about 30 minutes stopping for pictures as we wanted.
We drove to the end point according to google maps; however, we never arrived at the Quiraing parking lot. In hindsight, the parking lot was along our route, and the above photos show us driving through the Quiraing. I wish we would have found the parking lot in order to hike around this area, but it gave us the opportunity to discover more amazing places not on our list.
Loch Shianta
When we could not find the Quiraing parking lot, we pulled over at the next hiking stop we found. This happened to be the Loch Shianta walk. It was a short path that ended over looking the water.
Beach Time
The next planned stop on our list was Mealt Falls and Kilt Rock; however, along the drive we came across a sign that said beach this way. We drove through someone’s yard along the path to the beach. There was public parking along the side of the road, so we all got out and had a photo op on the shore! Using investigative google map skills this morning, I found the place we stopped. Taking the A855, turn onto Staffin Road following the “To the Beach” signs. There is another sign further down pointing to Slipway Beach. We stopped at one of the first car parks and looked around; however, during my google mapping this morning, I found the real beach a little further down the road.
We drove right by someone’s house, and Evan’s dad caught a picture of these cows walking by his window.
Kilt Rock and Mealt Falls
The falls were about 2 miles down the a855 from the entrance to the beach. This stop was mentioned in multiple tourist guides; however, I found it the least impressive. This was one of the few places we encountered in Scotland with guard rails. It’s small viewing area and parking lot were packed with people. The falls themselves were impressive, but it was hard to capture a good picture. I did read on some blogs about people leaving the main touring area and walking closer, but we popped in for a picture then left. At the time of our visit, there was a small food truck set up in the parking lot selling some hot foods and drinks.
From here, we stopped for 2 longer hikes, which I plan to cover in upcoming posts since they are so photo heavy! All of the stops mentioned in this post were along the A855, and are easily seen in a short amount of time.
