Scotland: Oban

We continued our road trip from Stirling Castle westward to Oban, Scotland (see our review of Stirling Castle here).  Rick Steves recommended Oban in his Scotland travel guide as a great stop over. So many blog posts included a stop in Oban to take boat tours to see the puffins. I am a little sad we could not fit this into our time line. See my pinterest page here for links to these reviews.

Getting there:

I chose the longer route around Loch Lomand for the views. They did not disappoint.

Arriving in Oban

Even though we booked our plane tickets 5 months prior to our trip, I did not book hotels quickly enough! When I looked for somewhere in Oban to stay, many of the recommended places were booked. We stayed at the Best Western on the main street in Oban. Link here

Pros: 1.On the main street and an easy walk into Oban  2. Free Breakfast

Cons: 1. very little parking in their parking lot  2. noisy rooms 3. most uncomfortable beds of the trip

Caveat: We stayed here over a year ago!

Snow!!!

Yes, I danced in the streets in the snow. Southerners don’t see snow very often!

I also wore all of the warm clothes I packed!

Downtown Oban

As I stated above, we did not have time to take one of the boat cruises to visit the Puffins. Oban served as an over night stop to begin our road trip journey. It snowed for the beginning of our walk into down town, but then the skies cleared. Crazy weather in Scotland!

We stopped into Coasters on the main street for a few drinks. A table opened by the windows, and we watched the storm roll by.

After this, we walked to Oban Fish and Chips Shop. The building is TINY. We squeezed onto the end of a table, and I didn’t take any pictures. The boys rated this the best meal of the entire trip!!

I loved this snow storm! It snowed off and on throughout the evening.

Thank you to Rick Steves for suggesting Oban. We saw snow, drank great beers and ate a wonderful meal while in town!

The next morning we hit the road to continue our road trip!
